Media release : 20 July 2012 Bulli ED 2012/#6
“Heads up, Lee Evans!” Save Bulli Hospital ED group offers pointers for Lee Evans’ meeting with ISLHD next week.
The office of Lee Evans has disclosed that the state member for Heathcote will meet next week with Prof Denis King, chair of the Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District.
And yes, Bulli Hospital will be on the agenda.
When the Save Bulli ED Group heard about the meeting, they decided that Lee Evans needed to be told a thing or two about the community feeling on the state government’s plan to close or downgrade Bulli Hospital Emergency Department.
They sought a meeting but were told that no, they could not meet with Lee Evans before the King meeting but could send through “some short dot points”, which they did this morning by email.
Save Bulli ED Group is also organising a public rally at the Bulli Masonic Hall at 2 pm on Sunday 29 July to give the community a chance to be heard by the health bureaucrats, and will pass community views from that rally on to State and Federal members.
But according to co-convenor Caroline Colton, even ahead of the rally it is already clear that Northern Illawarra residents are devastated to hear of the proposed demise of the Bulli E.D.
“People can’t believe they have to fight for something as basic as a hospital emergency department,” said Caroline. “I see this trend of closing emergency departments as a sign that the state and federal governments no longer care about the people. People will die. It’s as simple as that.”
“People can come to the rally at the Bulli Masonic Hall at 2 pm on Sunday July 29 to have their say on this,” said Caroline. “It’s important to show that we care, that it’s not a service that you can cut and no one will notice. Lives depend on it.”
